Armed police were searching the Nowton Estate, in Bury St Edmunds Suffolk this afternoon, after reports of a man with a hand gun, and unconfirmed reports of shots being fired.

Eye witnesses said that the whole housing estate was cordoned off as police and dogs conducted a search. Schoolchildren from nearby Hardwick Middle School and South Lee School left for home via different exits.

The cordon was lifted at approximately 4.10pm.

Police say they were called after a resident was visited by a man who threatened him and had what appeared to be a handgun. The resident left his home safely and the matter was reported to police. It is thought that the incident may have been a neighbourly dispute.
